How to convert transparent images to solid colored images?

Hello everyone! I have been given an artwork from a friend to edit. It has an image of a cup (solid) color and two strokes of smoke which are in different colors but they are transparent. And whatever I do in changing their colors, they just remain transparent as they change colors.

I woud like the transparent smoke colors be solid. Is there a way to do that?

I have been editing and searching for 3 hours now but I really just can't figure it out.

thanks.

If anyone has an idea how, and would rather work on a .psd file, I'd be glad to send it to them. Thank you very much!

I am not quite sure what you mean but are you wanting to make the steam a solid colour like this

I have changed the colours for the sake of illustration purposes. But if this is what you are after hold control and click the the layer preview icon in the layers pallet with our mouse that will make a selection of everything in the layer then create a new layer and just paint over the steam with any colour. it will only paint where the selection is.

Hi! Yes that might work! I will try. I am using a mac though, so instead of "control" i will use the "command" key right? thanks so much, I will try it right now. :)

I'm sorry I am not able to do it. I am in photoshop by the way. I know what you mean and I've seen it done too by someone else but I couldn't get the same effect. Instead, I am painting it but it is not constrained to the shape that I intend to.

is it okay, if you could type the steps one by one? if it's okay. Thank you so much :)

Hi again! I was able to do it! But still, it's still transparent, i can see the checkered background through the black color that I painted it over. I am actually making a t-shirt out of this image and I need it to be as solid black as possible. Would you want me to send you the .psd file?

Hello! Thanks so much! I figured it out now. I deleted the image layer and retained the new layer that was used to paint over, it's solid black now. Thanks so much! :)
