How to extract individual layers?

Hello

I tried reading some tutorials for that but when extracted the layer with the whole canvas is extracted and the layer ( a button ) is placed somewhere within the canvas at a location corresponding to its location in photoshop. What I want is that I extract a single and nothing else, it just extracts as a standalone with the extracted image of dimensions equivalent to the dimensions of the extracted layer and not the whole canvas. Any tips or tutorials I should use?

Thanks in advance!

Hello mate !!

For example, the file attached contains a bunch of web buttons. Now if I want to extract one of them as a separate transparent .png file then how would that be possible?

extraction can be done by the lasso tools, the magic wand or the regular one, or the pen tool for more accuracy !!

I am not trying to "capture", I am free to select and move the layer. The only problem I m having is trying to "extract" it to a separate image file.

Ok, here is the easy way:

1. Do a selection around the thing you want.
2. With your layers panel open, drag the image to the image you want.
3. Use the edit tools to put it into position.
3a. Using a layer mask, erase what you don't want.
4. Paint in light and shadow if needed.
5. Save in PS in case you need to do further work
6. Flatten.

Ok, I think I got this right. You want to take a layer out of a image in Photoshop and use it in another document? If that's right, here's some instructions.

Open the image you want to extract a layer from.
Create a new document with whatever dimensions you want.
Go into split screen mode, the controls for this are at the top of your Photoshop window. I'll make a screenshot for you.
Click on the tab that has the layer you want to extract.
Select the Move Tool (keyboard shortcut V)
Select the layer you want to extract and drag it to the new document where it will be placed.

I did some more research and found that in File->Scripts there is an option to extract layers as individual image files. However, whenever I run the script it doesn't shows a progress bar or anything and just keeps on doing "something" ( busy disk light ) and won't show any result for hours. I have individual layers that I want to extract, I don't understand how cutting etc would help me do that as suggested up till now or maybe I am mistaking as I am entirely new. Please remember I don't want to lose the transparency.

I hope I made my problem much clear now?

-Ctrl Click the layer thumbnail of the layer you want to "extract".
-Press Ctrl+C.
-File > New.
-If there is a white background, create a new layer, delete the older layer.
-Press Ctrl+V.

If this is what you wanted, this is not "extracting"

i dont get what the trouble is.
select the layer
go to "Select/select all"
then to "Edit/Copy"
then "File/New"
click ok
then "Edit/Paste"

if its not an image layer you could also
open destination file (file the layer will go to)
select layer from the main file
go to "Layer/Duplicate Layer"
choose the Destination Document
press ok

Ok got this one, I was able to duplicate it to a new document. Now all I want is to place the extracted image to the upper left most part of the new document and resize the document to match the size of the extracted image, both done automatically as manually there is a margin for positioning error. Is this possible?

This is possible and not so terribly difficult to do either. Ok, follow these instructions:

On the new document, select both layers by holding down the ctrl key and clicking on each layer.
Select the Move tool (keyboard shortcut V)
With all of your layers and Move tool selected, look up at the control panel. It's at the top of the viewing area where you make your images. You'll see a set of icons that represent where you want to align your image. Click on the symbol that has the Align Left tooltip, and then the symbol that has the Align Top tooltip. Your image is aligned to the upper left.
Take the Crop tool, keyboard shortcut C and make a selection over the portion of the image you want to keep. You can always adjust the crop area by manipulating the handles once you've released the mouse button. when you're happy with the crop, press enter and you're done.

OK.... and based on this post....

Regardless of where the extracted image is positioned in the canvas......

CTRL+click the image's layer icon in layers palette to select the extracted image.

In MENU>IMAGE>CROP to crop image to extracted image size.

DONE.

Or to make it simple, Use the selection marquee to select the part of the original image you need.

Then... In MENU>IMAGE>CROP to crop image to selected image size.

I guess I made this simple operation not so simple huh, :banghead:

lol... and based on your uploaded file....

Select the group you want.....

Merge the Set.

CTRL+click the button's layer icon to select the button.

lastly ... In MENU>IMAGE>CROP to crop image to selected button's image size.

Delete the unwanted sets and layers and you are left with a download button psd.

... for that matter all you have to do is select/highlight the layer. Select the move tool and drag the layer onto a new document. As Namanyay said, this is not "extracting," and using terminology that doesn't fit the issue is confusing for us all. It is much better if you simply describe in understandable terms what you need done. I hope one of these explanations answers your question.
