Also, have you considered using one of the programs that makes photo collages. I seem to remember that at least a couple of them allow the user to specify the number of rows and columns, so you could set it to N rows by 1 column. If you have other constraints such as "no space allowed between adjacent pix in the vertical direction", pls. let us know.
