Yes you can delete before the rename although I have no problem with gaps in my file list (delete after rename).
Just my 2¢ but there are viewers that can view raw files.
Shooting raw and Jpg slows down your camera, fills up your memory card quicker, and complicates your numbering systems.

You may want to look into one of those viewers.
