I need to create the background of this slide for another slide. (for a website)
What is the best way to do this?

Blank blue background layer. over lay a lighter blue layer but use the rectangular marquee tool to make a box in the middle portion of image, invert it and colour it lighter blue, repeat this process with a new layer in white, blur both rectangular marquee layers to get soft edges desired, chicken is optional.

Save the original image and just pick the colour out with the colour picker tool.

Okay I think I can figure it out. Thanks for you help, I am still learning photoshop (as you can tell)

No worries mate, and come back and show how you get on with it.

I created the blue background, created a lighter blue box in a new layer, then added the white box. I'm not sure where to go from here!!!

You need to go back a step. Instead of filling in a white box, you need to use the gradient tool (G) to fill in with a lighter blue. I'm not sure how experienced you are with the tools so does that make sense to you?

That's great but you are doing it the hard way and not learning a new tool. The gradient tool has more applications than this and is mathematically exact. If you are making an abstract painting, you want to see the evidence of your own hand creating the gradient, but there are times you will want that to be strictly controlled.

You will be happy you learned to use this tool, newbie.

(if you had ever tried to make a rainbow on a silkscreen with just inks and squeegee, you would jump to the gradient tool with open arms!)
