thanks for the info.. the second method is actually exactly what i already tried, but its more complicated than i thought.. the red doesnt change simply on a gradient over the entire image but across each uv island.. so i would need to somehow make a distorted gradient across different shapes and then have different layer blending in local space for 3d surface continuity to remain as its more than simply 'partially inverted' so i think its pretty messed up..
