Irritating feature, how can I deactivate

Hello, I have been using Photoshop for many years. I am now using CS4 and tolerating a certain feature that has finally irritated me enough to ask someone how to turn it off as I can't find anything about this in my search attempts. Here is my irritation: I select a layer in the layers palette to work with, I then click on any other layers in my workspace and it automatically selects them instead. So if I have text I want to move around but it is on top of a button, 9 times out of 10 when I click to move the text, the button moves instead because there is more available area to accidentally select. How do I turn this off? Used to, if you wanted this feature you ctrl or command clicked the layer. I cannot stand this auto select feature.

Thank you for your time and any help with this.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have looked all over for something like that and could not find it. I looked under preferences ( general, interface, cursors ) I looked under the select menu...could you please be more specific as to where this is located in CS4? I can't seem to locate it. THanks
