is this normal?

I have answered in PM bt here goes again.

If you have a document that is 300 X 300 and set at 72 dpi that is = to 72 dots of information per inch that your computer and printer can recognise as detail.

if start working on it and then you want to increase the DPI to 300 then photoshop needs to force in 228 more dots per inch. which is going to push all the other dots out slightly more and you could risk loosing sharpness as it will expand your document.

The dots at 72 dpi are bigger the dots at 300 dpi are a lot smaller hence they give of much more detail and the colours are smoother. however if you increase the resolution that is already open in an active document it will make it 300 dpi ish however the dots will be the same size as they were when it was dpi hence making your whole document bigger.

So to sum up when creating a new document always put your resolution in from the beginning.
