Just got CS4. Now stuck trying basics...

Hello,

I apologize if I am coming off too basic but everyone starts somewhere, right? Here is my issue. I have a picture that I want to use as a background for other pictures. Using two versions of the same picture (using Microsoft Paint and PowerPoint), I succeeded having the "picture" go from vibrant, sharp colors to a fade in the background. Then I put other pictures (portraits) on top of that picture. Then the portrait fades out and a new one takes it place over and over again. Downside with this set up is that the protraits' backgrounds cover the faded picture.

Now, I have a project using CS4 Photoshop which I never used before. I need to do the same thing using the same pictures. Question is how do I get a faded picture from the vibrant one? I am trying (trial and error) to get the portraits' background to go invisible so that only the face shows up on the new picture.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
