Layer styles not showing up in CS5?

Hi, all! I'm hoping someone can help me out...my layer styles have suddenly just stopped working. Everything was fine last night before my computer updated (still getting used to Windows 8, lots of updates) but nothing else seems to have changed. The layer styles are still THERE, the box still opens, but when I click on one to apply it to a layer, nothing happens. Opacity is good, correct layer is selected, etc...just, nothing happens. I can still copy layer style from another file that I made before, or edit those without losing it...but not add styles to anything new.

I haven't changed anything *intentionally*...is there something I could have done to turn them off? When I go to Layer - Layer Style, the option is still there to Hide All Effects, so I don't *think* I've turned them off... I'm just at a loss, and really, really need my shadows back!

Thanks for any suggestions!
 
Are you applying the style to a layer that encompasses the entire canvas? If so, the effects may be outside the canvas area.

You should also check Layer > Layer Style > Show Effects is selected (should show up in menu tree as Hide All Effects if the Show Effects is enabled).
 
Hi, Crotale - thanks for your help! What I was doing when I noticed the problem, specifically, was attempting to apply a white 3pt stroke and drop shadow to some reasonably small text (less than half the canvas size), so no, not a style that would lie outside the canvas area.

Layer > Layer Style, I see Hide All Effects...which means that they are enabled, correct?

I'm just at a loss. Please keep the ideas coming!
 
That sounds like they should be enabled. Can you provide a sample screenshot so that I can see how your layers look? An additional screenshot of your Layer Styles tool would be helpful.
 
Well, I do feel a little ridiculous right now. I tried everything I knew to do, closed Photoshop and walked away...and when I just reopened it to do screen shots, layer styles were working just fine. Super happy about that, but still wish I knew what happened...or how to keep it from happening again!
