Okay, since you say you're a total newbie I'm gonna try to explain it in pictures.
Have ready a honeycomb texture with the picture in white and the background in black.
I used this one this is a quick one and not at all perfect!)

Open a new canvas 1000 x 1000 px in 50 % grey

Use the cube wrap mesh

and move the scene so you have a view

click on the texture and in the opacity choose load texture

open the honeycomb texture file
This works as a mask: black conceals and white reveals

Change light and shadows at will and render.
