"Missing" color - lost pixels

My problem is this:

I am taking a PNG image and then loading it into photoshop, I use the magic selection tool and the other auto selection tool as well as select by color etc to separate different elements of the design in the image. Once I have an element selected I cut it from the base layer and paste it in place to another layer. The problem is that around the edges of where my selection was, it is missing some richness in color, or perhaps some opacity, i'm not sure but in any case - A duplicate of the original looks different then the original with an element cut from it and then re-pasted right into place. Why?! :banghead:

Hi gf,

You can post an example if you like, it would be helpful for us to see exactly what your describing.

Based on your description, I would hazard to guess it may be how and what your using to separate the different elements of the design. The magic or auto selection tools don't work as well as some other techniques.

Thanks for the reply - here are some screen grabs that illustrate the problem

Keep in mind that the design layer is simply a duplicate of the "Starting Image" layer. I guess what confuses me is the idea that (as you can see in the third picture) some pixels have been deleted or something. I assumed copy and paste was "lossless" so to speak. In other words, the selection I have made might not be perfect in terms of discriminating between what part I wanted and didn't want on a specific layer - but it wouldn't seemingly randomly delete elements along the edges.

TIA

if you use the magic wand you can uncheck "anti aliased"
Anti-aliased tells Photoshop that you want no hard, defined lines ,it feathers the selection
