My Layer mask only display as icon, please help?

This is a shape layer.
You can rasterize the layer and then put a mask on it, but you can't do anything much else to a shape layer. You can't paint on the mask or on the layer. Rasterize it is my suggestion and if that concerns you, then make a copy of the layer and turn off the visibility. That way it's there if you need it in its exact original size and placement.
