Need assistance fading out edges of a layer

I have a simple 2 layer image. The background is dark. Layer 2 is a person. I would like to fade out the edges of the person into the dark background but I am having a great deal of difficulty achieving the look I need. Likely a ridiculously simple solution to this but I need it explained to me nonetheless. Thanks very much. By the way using Photoshop 23.1, full version , not CC.
