Beat me to it.....so....

You could just set the gradient transparency...

If you know how to produce a gradient then you know how to set transparency.....just use the upper sliders as you would the lower ones.

Then just drag out your gradient as normal.

If you need the transparency over a longer distance then just add more stops in the gradient and adjust the opacity as required...
