Just digged out this old thread. Wow, great mercators in there. I think, I got my mercator right this time, though there is a question. Hope, I am not to late with it, so about one year later

In step 5 of the Style1 instructions it says to take the "Other" filter, then Maximum...... Whenever I tried that, it added 3 pixels to my lines. In the tut, they should get smaller. I used instead Minimum and all was okay. So is it only with my PS or is there a wrong word in the tut? No critics, just for information. I applied minimum filter in all later steps too, when "Maximum" was required.

This is a very interesting tut, indeed I see me making progress. Having tried it many times and always ended up in a mess, now this looks promising. This is the original without variations, hehe, but variations are in the making already.

Does it look like it should?
