Thanks IamSam, I'd try that too, if I had any idea how....   

 Mr. tom, that did the trick!  Thank you so much.  I guess it turns out the problem area wasn't turning darker after all.  Rather, the pixels all around it were just a little lighter.

Seems like despite how long I've been using photoshop, and how good I think I am with it, I'm really just a know-little-noob.  There is just soooo much to it.
