Old photo restoration

I started tinkering with restoration last year and this was one of my first portfolio jobs.

An old holiday snap. Studio shot against cloth backdrop with pony and cart props. Sorry about the watermark.

I had carte blanche with regard to the level of restoration and decided to keep it as original as possible.

Crop, fix colour, minor damage, clean up, major damage, balance.

Did as much repair as I could with old faithful (clone tool) but I soon found myself in unfamiliar territory and reaching for the brush to fix the coat tail, hooves, curtain and sleeve, etc. I think I use the brush more than anything else now!

What if anything would you do different?

Feedback very welcome as I'm not an artist and I've only been doing this for 6 months.

View attachment 29530I like what you did it looks good, I thought I'd play around with a little bit and came up with this idea hope you don't mind It looks to me as though the image has a yellow tint to it, probably from age but I thought I would add it to the original what I did was duplicated the layer, selected the repaired image top layer, added a new blank layer after selecting the yellowish tone from the original, used the paint bucket to paint over the new image and put the layer in color mode just playing. with an idea.

Hi iDad, thanks for your reply.
No I don't mind at all and I'm glad for the feedback.
I killed the tint early in the process as I assumed it was age related, although according to my wife I am often wrong :)
Cheers for the step by step, I am 6 months in and still not confident with layers and masks etc, I wouldn't have thought to add the colour back in that way.
I will be giving your method a run through when I get a chance.

Thanks, I think it took me about six hours over a couple of days.

But that was six months ago and I have nailed some of the basics since then, I could probably do it in 4 hours now

Shop is like that, once you get a grasp it becomes easier - but be aware that even seasoned pros get caught out, that's why shop is so cool.
