Photoshop 6 not opening its own files properly; Powermac

This is a new problem to me.
Double-clicking on a file to open it in Photoshop often results in the message "This layered Photoshop file was not saved with a composite image". I haven't had this problem before. Also when opening some of these files by starting Photoshop first they open as "Untitled" (Pict) files - even though they have been saved, as usual, as Photoshop files.

Files saved some time ago from Photoshop 6, which used to open properly, whether double-clicked, or via the application, are also doing this.
Any ideas why? NB I have never saved any files as "backwards compatible" and all layered files have always opened properly until now.

I recently added Photoshop 7 (not on the same disc). Photoshop7 opens the same files without any bother whichever way I try to open them; but 6 won't. Has PS7 got something to do with all this? If not, would reinstalling PS6 cure the problem?
(And yes, I do use both as I have OS9.1 on one disc and OS 8.6 on the other).

First off, let me welcome you aboard Shaun! :) :righton:

[confused] It's a strange problem, indeed, that you're having...but as I'm not familar with the Mac O/S I'm sorry that I can't be of help to you right now. :B Suffice to say that we do have "Mac Technos" here who will happily jump right in (when they're on-line) to help you with your problem, as best they can! ;)

In the meantime, enjoy your time here on the forum! :)

Hi and welcome :righton:

Before you do a reinstall of 6 try chucking 6s preference file and see if it makes any difference Shaun, pref files can get really corupt every now and then, its a good idea to keep a copy of a non corupt pref file handy so you just chuck the one you know is ok in when one acts up :)

Pict files are native of the OS itself I believe as screen shots are generally pict files.

Thanks both, for the welcome, and tips.
I had already tried deleting the PS6 prefs file.
The Prefs File that was corrupt was in fact the "File Exchange Preferences" and trashing that and restarting the Mac has cured the problem. (Solution via the Adobe User to User Photoshop forum which pointed me to document 324790).
