Quark Express

Quark is a piece of software they use to torture graphic artists. Quark is an evil, evil blight. }:\

That said, no, sorry, I haven't found any good turorials on the subject short of going to a book store and picking up a book.

What version are you looking to learn?

Quark X? Come to think about it, I've never seen one. Good question. Tho I haven't used that for years, MUST SEARCH.........

Yup Al....... you are a lone cowboy :bustagut: :P [:I . It's basically a layout apps sort of like Pagemaker on steroids :D . When adobe acquired Pagemaker, Quark was laid in the backroom.

Thanks for the help all. I will keep on looking. I normaly wouldn't use Quark X exept that this printing house in town that I do some work for uses it and they want me to have a go at it. [confused]

Then be prepared to pay for it as it is quite expensive!
In fact: it is only needed for making lay-outs of books and magazines and such. If you deliver any good pdf the printer will not be able to XPress his gratitude.

Normally the file made in Quark or InDesign has to be made ready for print in another application like Preps.

You can find a demo of Quark XPress 6 and a 7 page demo in Computer Arts magazine 77, September issue:

I have a friend that designs for a newspaper and she uses Quark. Doesn't really like the program. I did a ton of research and went with Pagemaker. Haven't had any problems so far... [shhh]

I believe she is going to switch to Pagemaker. She has problems with files going to print. She has been doing this for years and the company she works for would only let her use Quark. Lemme email her and see if she has any good tut links or info for ya.

There's a desktoppublishing forum - but I can't remember the URL - it used to be in my favourites, but seems to have got lost.
I use Quark 4.1 and think it a marvellous program for desktop publishing and a lot more efficient than Pagemaker - but each to his own. When I get round to using OS X I might save up for Quark 6!
If you don't like Quark then there's Adobe InDesign2 which does the same job, but differently.

That's true, and more printing houses will take or insist on quark before pagemaker. I find pagemaker easier to use, but it's a pain for printing. Good point. Keep reading... ;)

Now we're talking. InDesign takes all the power of Quark and turns it into a quick and easy process. It's made by adobe, it works like adobe, and it's easy like adobe. If you already spent 1000 bucks on quark, you are probably invested in using it. For someone new? You have to use photoshop for graphics editing anyway, even if you use quark (no graphics editing capabilities besides drawing little squares, or that little alien thing. hehe i love easter eggs), You can buy the Adobe Studio package for under $1000 and it comes with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Everything you'd need plus more. In short, Viva Adobe ;) hehe
