Another good candidate for.... yes... ... you guessed it...

Displace.

And of course, the definitive tutorial on beginning with displace:

I've used dmaps to build filmstrips, ribbons, etc. and it works well... plus the added bonus that you can use the dmap to shade your work when you're done

Some extreme bends will have to be drawn by hand, but this makes like super easy. .... once you learn it. heh
