There are some really good tips and suggestions here.

You haven't mentioned the word "bow" yet but I sorta like the ribbon and bow tut on this site: http://www.chadogroup.com/carla/red_bow/

I've used it several times and have been happy with the outcome

Sinedots adds a little extra translucency to the effect if that is what you are after.
