Sounds like a job for an Adjustment Layer > HSB.
Make selection.
Click the Ad-Layer button and choose HSB.
The selection will automatically be the HSB Ad-Layer mask.
Fiddle with the settings.
Then you can turn it on and off or fiddle with the settings and all that - while being non-destructive.
