Thanks Mark, the thread was very helpful even stumbled on to another method by chance of locating the layer besides the Command, Control.

I first choose the Move tool and then hold down the Command key. Then while the cursor is over the image I click the mouse and the layer will be highlighted in the Layer Box.  Using this method will just show you the top layer whereas using  the Command Control method will show a list of layers if there are more than one.
