If your vectors are from Illustrator they are linked, when you edit them it's in Illustrator.Once in PS as a smart object they are raster. Although they will no longer be linked to Illustrator, to get some scalabilty I think you'd be better off to bring them into PS as shape layers. Shape layers in PS are vector containers although the contents are still raster.
