Clare,I like Camera Raw though it can be hard to learn without guidance. (Gee, sounds like PS) I took the above jpeg I "fixed up" and opened it in Camera Raw. I made some adjustments to highlights and shadow, a little contrast and vibrance. Like Laser, I found it was best for the sharpening. I used some masking in Camera Raw to restrict the sharpen.
Then I went back to PS and did some more color work with a color balance adjustment. I added a gaussian blur and as I said above, used the filter mask to pick out details. Then I cloned the highlights. Finally, I used the smudge tool to soften some of the noise that I would have had to blur too much to get rid of. I overdid the smudge a bit, lol.
I guess it's important to know how to do this kind of "fix," but I hope you won't have to work with pictures of this quality very often!

I like that you were able to get rid of the green cast Laser. Was that using the HDR? I just didn't like the red blotches you ended up with. But there is some handiwork in this image you can't avoid, so that could be cloned out too. Nice job.
I also like the B&W approach Mike.
