Let's touch on the arrow design. Here's a twist to a tutorial created by one of our moderators, IamSam.

I'm doing this on a 500px x 500px canvas at 72 dpi. If you're creating something at a different size, you may have to play with the settings mentioned here...

STEP 1 - Create new document with a white background. The background is needed in order that you may drag in vertical and horizontal guides that will snap to the center of the document as shown.

Tech-Strategy-Design-1.jpg

STEP 2 - On 2 new layers, create elliptical shapes - one with a diameter of 480 pixels and another at 350 pixels. Select Elliptical Marque Tool, select Fixed Size, enter dimensions. Hover your mouse crosshairs at the center of the guidelines, press ALT+click to create selection centered in the document. Fill shapes with desired color to distinguish them.

Tech-Strategy-Design-2.jpg

CTRL+click the layer icon of the smaller ellipse to select the shape. Click on the larger ellipse shape layer to make it active and hit delete. There's the start of the arrow design. I've hid the BG layer so you can see the shape.

Tech-Strategy-Design-3.jpg

STEP 3 - In the tools box, select the Custom Shape Tool and in the Shape flyout, select arrow shape as shown. Create shape and move it in place as shown.

Tech-Strategy-Design-4.jpg

STEP 4 - CTRL+click the shape mask layer icon to select the shape. Click on the "ring" layer to make it active and hit delete.

Tech-Strategy-Design-5.jpg

Deselect and hide the Arrow shape layer. At this point you have this ...

Tech-Strategy-Design-6.jpg

STEP 5 - At this stage you have to rotate the shape by entering the value in the SET ROTATION in the Menu. As you need 6 arrows, you have to rotate the shape in increments of 60° . If you need more, you have to do the math (360 divided by no of arrows).... 8 arrows = 45° , 10 arrows = 36°, etc.

CTLR+T to rotate, enter 60 in the Set Rotation, hit enter to commit rotation.

Tech-Strategy-Design-7.jpg

Repeat STEPS 4 and 5 to delete sections of the ring, rotate the shape until you have this....

Tech-Strategy-Design-8.jpg

There's the Arrow design.

For the text, you can do this either via text via path shape or WARP TEXT in the menu. I'm giving you via WARP Text as it's easier to do.

To begin, rotate the ring as shown, enter 30 in the Set Rotation field.

STEP 6 - Create text - center aligned and positioned as shown.

Tech-Strategy-Design-9.jpg

STEP 7 - Use warp Text as mentioned using ARC Style and try the settings I used. Use the Arrows curvature to guide your text warping. Play with the settings to get the look you like.

Tech-Strategy-Design-10.jpg

Nudge/Center along the arrow shape.

Tech-Strategy-Design-11.jpg

STEP 8 - link the arrow ring and text layer together. CTRL + T to rotate it. at increments of 60. Repeat step 6 and 7 until you've completed the design.

To change color of arrows, you can use the bucket tool on each arrow or create a selection around an arrow, use move key to nudge up and nudge back. This will select the arrow section to fill with desired color.

Or the harder way which is create a selection around an arrow and cut to new layer one by one. Lock the layer transparencies so you can fill them with color as you wish. These are linked so you can rotate them as a whole.

I hope I've covered everything you need to do and that this isn't confusing for you. Post your questions for clarification if you have any.....

Thanks dv8! I was working on a tutorial but you beat me to it! I had all the images, but I had not written it up yet!

Your idea for the arrow was excellent! My solution was not as simple!

About the only thing I did different was I used a "type on path" for my text.

Thanks, guys.

Sam, where's Zeealex and Tom?

Mine was the shortcut, lazy way........ maybe you can touch on the type text via path?

Why not post your technique as well? It may come in handy to know other ways to do it. And you never know it might come in handy to do other things with a bit of tweaking in the same manner I tweaked your "pie-cutting" technique....... DV8ted  .....

I was getting to them! LOL!!! They were going to be in the middle along with PSG! I just hadn't made them at the time of my posting. I thought I would have more time to prepare! (I'm glad I didn't)

My technique was basically the same as yours, I just made the chevron arrow with the Polygonal lasso tool. Your way, using the Custom Shape tool, is ten times easier! We rotated the shape a bit differently. I used a step and repeat until I had all 6 chevrons in place at 60 degrees, comnd/cntrl + clicked the layer (with the chevrons) and hit delete. Your way was much easier.

I think that using the arch text function was much easier than the text on a path.

I learn something new almost everyday! There's nothing wrong with easy!

This is a great tutorial and very useful to all of us. Really really appreciated for making a tutorial our of it. I haev a small query see am at the step 5 so-far .My question for you is how can i match the equal distance? This si where am currently on your great tutorial.

Don't move the black arrow shape used for cutting the ring shape.

Make sure the guidelines are at the very center of document. This is why I centered the RING shape with its center anchor point in middle of the guidelines. Keep the black arrow in the position I show and don't move or rotate it.

Make sure to select the green ring layer whenever you want to rotate it. You rotate the green ring in increments of 60 degrees using the SET ROTATION as shown here....

Set Rotation.jpg

This will ensure equal distances of the deleted parts and you'll end up with an equally cut arrow ring object.

Awesome here is my final one. Also how to change the individual arrow colors?

Also is there any best method to center the guides to the canvas ??

....now it's Hoogle, Paul and Zeealex missing.... how did MrTom get into the mix..... :)

Make sure you have SNAP on (Menu>VIEW>SNAP)... and at least full color fill on the layer. drag in the guides slowly by clicking outside the document bounds (from left/right or top/bottom) and drag into the document . When it reaches the center, the guide will "snap" into place.

OK.... paint bucket tool isn't good to use on this one. Try the other... create selection around an arrow then nudge up and nudge down to select the selection to fill with color. Repeat this with the other arrows.

But one of the best ways is to apply a vector mask to the Arrow ring layer. CTRL+click the ring layer to select the ring object then click the add vector mask icon as shown to apply the mask.

color fill.jpg

Brush in the desired colors using a large brush. Make sure to paint on the ring itself and not the vector mask. To make sure, click the ring layer icon before adding color.....

OMG its photoshop at its best. Great tutorial df8_fx . IamSam am looking forward your tutorial as well.

I appreciate this problem is solved but couldn't help thinking this is an ideal situation for my custom panel...

F9 Guides.

(Yes, this is a shameless plug and a desperate plea for people to at least try it out....even if it's useless.)

Sorry I didn't recognise the problem earlier, I may have been able to save you all some time.

Regards.
MrTom.

On the colors, I placed the circular arrows into a group.
I used the Lasso tool to make a selection of one of the arrows..

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 9.15.49 AM.png

I then hit Cmnd/Cntrl + J to copy the arrow to it's own layer.
I repeated this with all the arrows.

Then I Cmnd/Cntrl + clicked the thumbnail of the individual arrows and filled with the desired color.
Cmnd/Cntrl + D to deselect.

I did it this way to make it easy (for me) to change the colors of the arrows quickly.

And I could add layer styles to each.
