Try creating your type in a text layer. Double click to bring up Layer Styles. Add a drop shadow. You'll want to experiment with the distance, spread (if any at all) and lighting direction. Next Layer > Layer Style > Create Layer will create a new layer just below the text layer with the drop shadow rasterized. Now Command + Click (Control + Click on a PC) on the text layer to load the selection. Make the drop shadow active and delete. Delete (or make invisible) the original text layer.

Welles' way will work, but if you want to have your text and styles remain editable try this:
Create your text/shape/whatever. Apply the drop shadow layer style to it with whatever settings you like. Now reduce the fill to 0% and only the shadow will remain. This way you can still edit the settings or the text since you haven't rasterized anything.

You can make a glass effect using layer styles that can be applied to text as well and they will remain editable. Once again you can down load a simple style set of two styles at http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/6075534/ . One is glass and the other is a smoked glass.
Type in the text that you want and if you are using Photoshop Windows version you can even apply a quick copyright symbol to to text by holding down the alt key and typing in 0169 on the numeric keyboard. Then apply the glass style you have downloaded or one of your own.
PS to all I am new and don?t know if it is ethical at this site to send folks to link I have for movies and styles and the like. It is really the fastest way I have of getting some of the info to people. If it isn?t please tell me and I will forgo it in the feature. OK?

Visable Drop effects only...
While in the Layer style pallet, this is where you create your drop shadow etc., under:
Blending Options
Advanced Blending
Change the Fill Opacity to 0% this will do what you are wanting.
This is a fairly useful effect, think of it this way, if you create a new layer and say pain one dot in it you can then enact your effect. (Drop Shadow, Inner shadow, what ever...) Then you are able to "paint" in the effect without having to effect the lower layers.
Think of it as a "Vector Mask" with out that is editable with like a normal layer.

However I'm not sure of your suggestion to paint in one dot. Doesn't this work with just an empty layer?
A similar idea is to create a new empty layer, apply a layer style to the empty layer and start painting. You paint in the effect.
