Hi,

A long time ago when I did VRML I used Photoshop for the
render and if I'm not mistaken ( cause it WAS a long time ago ) -
it was with the help of Stu that I made the waves with Photoshop
and this is how it looked like :

Anyway, since I do 3D I still use Photoshop for some renders
and now I made a low poly boat for the game we are working
on and I want to create the effect of "white water" or waves
or something to look more real ( in a fantasy way ) and I
dunno how make it with photoshop.

Here is the image I need to add the wave/ripple too :

Ok, in the preview I see it's all messed up, so the big ship
is the old VRML one and the pic with 4 pics is the low poly
boat, incase you didn't figure that out ^_^

Any help will be appriciated,

Ran

Have another question so instead of making a new thread I'll
ask it here, it's more for Mark or the moderators I think :

Is there a way to see old posts like 3-4 years ago of the old
forum ? there was a funny image I made there with all the
active members of that time and I'd like to see it again for
old time sake . . .
( if you remember it's when we are all in a funny house with
windows, Rick with his guitar and Wendy in bikini or something )

Thanks,

Ran

*checkin' to see if avatar image appears*

I uploaded an image . . . why can't I see it ?

Hi Ran...

Ran, try and upLoad your avatar again ok. If it still doesn't work then attach it here in a post, and i'll put it up for you.

I think the "custom rank" MOD i installed is causing this problem. I'm looking into it. Sorry for the inconvenience. :B

As to your waves question...
Are you painting a texture for the 3D model/scene, or just post-editing this still image?

Hi bud :D

Ya as Mark said still shot or animation?,if its a still you can paint some white caps in,if it animation you would probably be better doing a search for a free waves generator/plugin for Max,to get a decent effect :)

I helped with waves huh,gee I cant remember that :D ,but I know I used to prefer the frosted glass filter to the waves filter for water if thats any help.

Stu.

Hi :)

Thanks for the reply guys.

It's nothing related to 3D, the game engine will deal with the
water, I just want a nice render to "show off" the boat, some
times I edit some of my models ( put environmet ) so the
render won't be boring.

So actualy I need to draw thease little waves that comes out
from the front of the boat when it's in "real" sea.
Or if there is a nice technique ( maybe with the filters ) to
create that, I'm gonna check out Stu's advice and see if
works.

Stu, as far as I remember - your advice back then was to
make circles with air brush ( I'm gussing not at 100% opacity )
and it was ok for that look casue that VRML ship was big and
far ( I remember you drawed some shores with little waves
near it ), but this boat is in close up and I need something
more clear.

Mark, I'm gonna try again the avatar image and if it won't
work I'll upload it, thanks !

Ran

Mark, in the profile it sais I already have an avatar image but
for some reason it won't show it so I'm attaching here
the image which is part of my "real" signature which is too
big :

Thanks,

Ran

Ok Ran i'll put up your avatar for you.

I spent all afternoon and night now trying to figure out what the hell is causing this problem, but i just can't find anything. Aaaargh! [upset]

I'd like to fix the dang thing, but now's not a good time to be doing this becaus i'm trying to get the new "Tute Shop" section done.

Anywho... i'll just do yours manually. No biggy. :B

Wahoo ya fixed it Mark :D

Ran ok then its painting time for some waves. One of the hardest things I have found is to try and explain how to paint waves as its such a random thing due to the nature of the objects you are painting waves around etc bud.

Actually might be easier to just model them on a plane in your 3d app bud,I do that sometimes.

Stu.

Thanks so much Mark :D

OMG, Stu, you are so right, would be so easy to just model
the waves.

Thanks again guys,

Ran

Yeap displacement map is nice and so is modeling but I can't
waste so much time now, I thought a quick tip in drawing will
solve the problem since the images are quite small.

I'm new to using PS, so I don't know any quick tricks for this...but I tried to add some interest/ripple to the water in the backgrounds by copying and pasting the boat/figures to their own layers, duplicating the original double image for the water/background then applied the ripple filter to that at -226%. This roughed up the water and the shadow cast by the boat. With the original boat/figure images on the layer above that I could use the eraser tool to remove any reflected boat colors off the water and around the boats/figures. I used the smudge tool on the background copy to push blue water up along the boats' hulls so they looked more as if they were sitting "in" the water. I then did this also along the edges of the hulls on their own layers. I used a 300 airbrush at size 6 and opacity of 24% to add a few ripples here and there. Then I smudged them at 52% strength. Also smoothing out ripples here and there which looked too wavy.

I hope this may help in some way. ;)

To add white caps I recommend using a textures brush and fade the diameter for a taper effect. You can also play with the opacity of the brush so you can build up the cap.
