    technical remark. In some cases itd be better to convert a base layer to smart object due to the fact that a clipping layer doesnt affect outer effects such as outer glow, dropshadow and stroke.

    LOL, then one more option is to make it with using animation. The 1st frame - 0% opacity, the 2nd one - moved aside and upwards with 100% opacity, tween animation, make layers from frames, kill animation, assign darken mode for all layers.

    STRWD, what an amazing trick! Kinda motion trail imitating a shadow. The other way is using blends in Illustrator. But your trick is better.

    Your saved image list is a flattened image with alphachannel and slices. So to edit sprayer (eg to add some extra shapes) you need to change the source document and resave it.
