I invite all new members to share in this forum their interest in Photoshop. This is a very friendly forum and we make no distinction between beginners or experienced users. Everybody is treated with respect and even if you don't have anything special to post, we're always in for a good laugh. I want to take this opportunity to remind you of a section we have called "Other Interests". You can feel totally free to post in this section. I know that we also have some experienced web -designers and computer experts among our members, so this would be great section for other computer related questions.
If you're still not convinced, I'm inviting you to check out the different forum sections and hopefully you come to the conclusion that this is a very open community. I hope that you will experience the same joy that I experience in this forum.

On behalf of PhotoshopGurus members,

We hope to welcome you in your first post :righton:

I noticed that 12 new members joined us over the last 2 weeks, but sadly enough only 2 seem to have the courage (?) to post.

separate drop shadow

Hello,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I've done a few searches and can't find anything on this but does anyone know how to separate a drop shadow from a graphic so that the drop shadow can be used in Quark as a stand-alone? TIA

Natalia

Hi Nataliad, welcome to the board! :)

About your problem.
  • Select the subject
  • Create a new layer
  • Fill the selection with black
  • Deselect
  • select filter/blur/gaussian blur
  • click on move tool, select "show bounding box" and resize or move selection
  • If you want to cut out the subject, select the subject again, go to the layer with the shadow and press delete.

This is a short tutorial that describes the use of selection tools:
http://www.photoshopgurus.info/beginners/learning_fundamentals/selection-tools.shtml

Another way to separate a shadow (depending on what exactly you want to achieve) is by adding a "drop shadow" layer style and give the object the same color as the background.
Don't forget; you can't use these shadows as a transparent GIF on a webpage without losing quite some quality.

If you have any more questions, start a new thread in the "Technical Q&A" section.

Gonna leave a post just to make the world a better place!
And if anyone uses LightWave 7... Help! I had no idea what I was getting into. I'm reading the book and all the tutorials I can find. I just need some basic "hand-holding" to get started.

Welcome James LightWave? never heard of it is it like a heat wave only with light? he he he just teasin [confused]

O.K.

Just registered. There's nothing like a new photoshop forum! New to me anyway. I am a photoshop freak and will do anything to use photoshop. Well, almost anything. Hopefully I will learn some new and exciting things here.

thanks
