tablets existed in the 1980s when I was using a commodore 64 for graphics.

Tablets have been around longer than photoshop, and have always been available to use.


i hope this doesn't mean that as a moderator, you're still using a mouse?

I stand corrected on the how long tablets have been around question, but if you mean to tell me that nothing has been done worthwhile in Photoshop that was not done with a tablet then that is one of the most laughable things I've heard on this forum in awhile.

lol it's probable that 90% of the world's photoshop users are using a mouse. So of course all the good stuff is done with a mouse.

But all the great stuff is done only with a tablet

As for the tablet topic,

A tablet is a great tool. But does not mean all great art is created with it. There are a lot around created with just a mouse.

its the apple linen texture and im wanting to colorize it, it seemed to have worked best when i took the depth down all the way

I am sure Smokey is a rep for Wacom lol I was starting to think he had lost his job as all was quiet on the tablet pitches lol.
( I am only kidding dude before you get upset)

Anyway back on topic Is this the kind of thing your going for ( I assume you mean the iphone task bar look that is normally Grey


Any way if this is what you are after Fill your background layer with the colour you want

Create 2 new layers and fill with white or even the same colour if you like add noise by going to filter > noise > add noise on both layers the amount is up to you and check the monochromatic box

Then select 1 layer and go to filter > Blur> Motion Blur keeping the direction horizontal

Then do the same with the other layer but put direction as vertical until you get the fiber type look

Now on bothe these layers go to blending options and move the blend if slider from white towards black until you are happy. Hence I filled my layers with white as you get more blending control.

Then set these layers to luminosity and adjust opacity to suit

Or play with different blending options

Before I go any further... have you used a wacom tablet with photoshop?

Seriously guys try and make your posts primarily based on topic. Why not start a thread smokey showing the advantages of a tablet in your eyes create something with a tablet and then try and recreate it using a mouse.

I am an advocate for them to and I am sure Paul has a tablet we get that you think a tablet is the best thing next to photoshop but I know several people that hate them and then I know people who have put there mouse away and just use a tablet for everything.

with a tablet, you can draw and paint naturally, like you do with a pencil on paper.

You *cannot* do that with a mouse.

Now, if you're using photoshop strictly for photograph editing and automated commands, then a mouse is fine.

But if you're using photoshop to draw and paint like you would with a pencil on paper or paint on a canvas, then you *need* a tablet. This *can't* be done with a mouse. Just like a car *can't* be driven with just one tire.

You can try it with a mouse, but it is absolutely *impossible* to achieve the same results with a mouse. This is because the way the tablet interacts with your hand and your hand's movements as opposed to a mouse.

It all depends on what you're using photoshop for, I suppose.


put it this way:


place a piece of paper on your desk. Now, wet the underside of your mouse with some ink. Now draw a picture on your paper with the mouse. What does your picture look like? crap. this is because your mouse has no sharpened "point" like a pencil does, and your hand is not naturally drawing/writing like it would with a pencil.

Now, use a real ink pen to draw the same picture on the same piece of paper. what does your picture look like? great.

You guys ever sign your initials digitally on one of those tablets? sometimes when you get a delivery from fedex or you have to sign your name on a credit card transaction, you have to use the digital pen on the small hand-held screen. Try doing that with a mouse. Impossible, right? Right.

This is what i'm getting at. you can't draw a picture with a mouse; but with a pen, you can.
