Can you get this licence plate???

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to these forums so I hope this is the right place to post this.

Long story short, I was ran off the road by a driver overtaking a truck on a blind corner yesterday. The police are willing to charge her, however, for that I need the licence plate. Fourtunatally, I had a dash cam and the whole thing was recorded.. Unfourtunatally, I can't get the plate.. Every time I look at it I'm seeing S329ATL, but this isn't registered to the make of car :( I was hoping by throwing some of the stills from the video out here a few of you might be able to have a look and see if you come up with anything different, it would be greatly appreciated! If you think you can make it out post the number here and I'll look it up and see if it could be that car.

yep, i realise that.. but hey, it's worth a shot.

I know that nothing can be done to 'enhance' an image enough to actually make this readable, but I was able to start to make things out when I was playing around with some filters etc.. so I was hoping someone who knows the ins and outs of photoshop much better than me might be able to take a stab at a possible alpha numeric combination based on the shapes that are visible.

There is nothing there to define I'm surprised you think you have the first three letters just a guess?

This is a tough one. It really didn't sharpen up very well using various algorithms I tried on it.

You saw S329ATL.

I think there's a chance that the "9" might be a "7", and your "A" might be an "R".

I guess he knows who not to ask now lol... Erring on the side of caution is not a bad thing. Being paranoid about abuse could be taxing on your mental health though:thumbsup:
 
Thanks for the help guys, this is the outcome I was expecting. I guess it's not worth pursuing any further.. bad drivers annoy the absolute s$#t out of me so I wanted to try everything.

Not sure what you mean by proof JohnD.. I've got video of the whole incident, and, i'm stating the obvious here, it's the job of the police to determine after I provide the information to them (which won't be happening now anyway)? There is nothing you can do with a licence plate other than provide it to the police anyway... the best any civilian can do with it in this case is run a search on the SA GOV website that will only return the registration status, make and colour.... Unless you think I'm some kind of hacker who is willing to hack the police system :bustagut: most people see hundreds, if not thousands of licence plates every day....... you must be living life in constant fear of someone "easily abusing" you!, take from that what you will :wink:

iDad, thanks for having a look.. when at 100% zoom and playing with some filters I was able to make out some lines.. the first letter is an S and thats just because all 7 character plates in SA start with an S. Everything else was en educated guess based on position of the darkest pixels and the curvature of the shadows

The first letter is an S because all 7 letter alpha numeric plates in SA start with an S... everything else was an educated guess as I like to call it. I used the curvature of the barely discernible lines that are visible and the placement of the darkest pixels to try and make a letter fit, almost like the old joining the dot pictures my mum used to give me all those years ago.
 
I tried many different routes, actually I could not make anything out with a 100% certainty. Just make and model may be able get you there, if you can do some detective work. If that car is within a reasonable distance from where this happened. But that's a stretch too LOL

I don't know forensics. BUT I know Toms Skill and this answer is as good as you will get.

John, public information is everywhere today.....Google your own name..:shocked: Never know what you will find. I participate on a forum where we try to figure what type of vehicle is shown, the plates are blacked out (so we cannot get it that way) If you have a badge, then no sweat.....or have a good "buddy" helping ..in other words, we can't stop the abuse, but legally I have to follow the law, and display that plate in PUBLIC...anyone can see me! So chill out....we don't need black helicopters flyin around this forum....:thumbsup::cool2:
 
I also doubt the authority's want help....after all they are the professionals not us Gurus
 
In NZ we have #555 from a cell phone, and I understand that police not only follow up these reports, but actually prosecute based on these calls. It sounds open to abuse, but perhaps they need more than one complain to charge the driver.

As to this photograph, 1280 x 720 looks like a single frame from a dash mounted video camera, so are there other frames that would help? What would you do if you had the number? The chances are this was not an isolated incident, so your picture might support other reports. The police are also able to use the vehicle make and colour to narrow their search, and the same car might have been photographed by police speed cameras in the area at around that time. I'd send the police the image and a report. It will cost you nothing, and may ruin that drivers day!
