Layer Styles color overlay styles

Hello there,

I have a question related to the color overlay styles available.

I'm trying to make different previews of paint options for a wall at a local gym.
So I took a picture of one of the corridors.

I'm trying different color options for the walls taking from these color codes.

I created a mask the yellow areas of the wall.
Then I created a solid color layer and applied the mask to it.

So far I've been using the "color" or "saturation" overlay style, however, I feel it is not always giving an accurate rendering of the selected color.

For instance, the "Dim Gray" version I made doesn't look at all like the selected color.

Any ideas ?

Here I use a Curves Adjustment layer to match the color exactly: https://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/threads/pantone-color-change.58920/#post-1533740595

This would solve your problem.

Hey Sam,

Thanks for the suggestion. So I read the post you linked in your reply.
I've tried a curve adjustment layer, clipping it to the masked layer only.

The problem is that the curve adjusts is having a very minimal impact on the color of the wall.
I'm changing the curve shape like crazy but the impact is very small.

What opacity style should be the curves layer adjustment layer set to ?

Thanks

Don't clip it. No clipping required. It was not described in the technique I linked you with.

Leave the opacity set to 100%

Just in case your asking about the layers blending mode...........leave that on normal.

Yes, it was the layers blending mode :joy:

Anyways, doing that, I just can't get the color right. Its generally way to bright.

And then
