How to create this light effect?

Extracted held up trophy from a stock photo; placed on a darker background; pasted light patterns overtop (google light swirls); used masks on these swirls to either keep them overtop or behind the hand and trophy; experimented with various blend modes (darken, hard light, etc) of the swirls to best match and blend in.

Great work Gary! It's a nice effect.

The original effect was made from the image of the football player and probably from a moving/motion video of him jumping a celebrating.

You can see his arm, shoulder, and chest in the effect. It was probably not created in Ps.

Thanks Sam. Probably, as you stated but I did think about playing with double exposures of the subject in various opacities. That's as far as I got.

Yeah...that's a great idea as well.

You would probably need several photos or frames of the player in different or progressive poses and stances. Apply some type of smoke/ghosting (motion trail or echoing) effect with distortion from warping and liquify. That's just getting started, there would be many other filters (motion blur, wind, etc.) and adjustment layers.

Agreed and very time consuming to get it right.
Cheers.
