    Well, your sun lacks any color at all, so you would end up just painting the red in there anyway. I would copy the sun you like from the other picture and paste it over top of the white sun in your pic, lol.

    My only guess is that you have "Auto Select Layer" checked in the arrow toolbar and you weren't clicking on any pixels in the top layer. You may have been auto selecting the lower layer. If you uncheck that option, it won't matter what you do, you will always move the layer that is currently...

    backlit photo effect - please help

    You will not be able to pull off that effect with that image. The highlights are all coming from a light source behind the photographer, creating shadows where you would need highlights. Like you said, the lighting and intention needs to be there from the outset, or you will end up hand painting...
