    Gradient problem

    It usually reverts to grayscale when you open an image that is already grayscale; in other cases, the mode will be indexed colour, and you won't be able to actually edit the layers of the file. In this case, do exactly the same :)

    Try switching the colour mode of the document (Image -> Mode -> RGB). Hope it helps :)
