    In Illustrator you can use a transparency mask. Make a new shape on top, the same size as the pattern object, fill it with a black and white gradient. Select both objects, then Window-Transparency-Make Mask.

    Not to belittle the pen tool, I use it a lot, but some selections are more easily done with other tools. I made this selection with the quick selection tool and polygon lasso very quickly. If you are going to use the pen tool for something like this, try adding a vector mask.

    Layeres Image Question

    Change the layer to a smart object. If you want to use another image, right Click the layer and select Replace Contents... The new content will have all the same attributes.
