    And layer mask = alpha channel I assume? If so then finally somthing is starting to make sense in my head.

    I belive you are correct in this, but if it's as you suggest couldn't the same be accomplished just using a masking layer, and why wouldn't you? Acctually I've tried to get this question answered for a few days and I started out at the adobe forums for beginner as you can see in the below...

    I'll do just that thanks for the input. Have you had a chance to look at my examples? If you have does the above still stand? Also my understanding of the alpha channels/ paths is almost non existent any good reading tips?
