    For such plain and few colors i use ColorRange with holding shift and small radius (about 20). And just make new solid color for each color: For better result can always fix some things with brush on solid color's masks.

    What i would do. 1. Leave image in RGB mode. Make selection and use Layer/New/Layer Via Copy of object i want to be colorfull. 2. Select Background (original) layer. 3. Create new Layer/New Adjusment Layer/Black & White. Result: Or just select object invert selection Select/Inverse...

    Can you make an outer glow around an invisible object?

    Yes you can do that. In layers panel set outer glow and set Fill to layer 0%. That will make layer invisible but effect will stay on. Preview, one is Red solid color Fill=100%, second Fill=0%:

    Linear Burn is one of Blending Mode. Ussually it been asociates with layers but it is option for brush tool too. Don't know what linear burn really do. I mean i use it but what exactly it do...of course, i can google for it and pretend that i know it :) Logicly thinked i can say that it burns...

    Now everything is clear. Here is problem (makerd with red): Change Mode to Normal and Flow to 100% and you'll be fine.

    For my eye, camera itself are too dark (no details). If you'll print it that will look like just black area. Maybe that's what you wanted.
