Im working on a photo of my son in a football game. I have removed the backround and left the players in action. I want to change the original pic to black and white and overlay the players in color. when I try to drag the color cutout over it converts to B/W also. How can I keep them in their original state? Any help is appreciated

What i would do.

1. Leave image in RGB mode. Make selection and use Layer/New/Layer Via Copy of object i want to be colorfull.
2. Select Background (original) layer.
3. Create new Layer/New Adjusment Layer/Black & White.

Result:
greyscale.jpg

Or just select object invert selection Select/Inverse and Image/Adjusment/Desaturate.

But first way is more elegant.
