    Non-destructive techniques in Photoshop

I use adjustment layers a LOT. Best way to work, but in some situations, only descructive techniques will give you the exact result you're after. Fortunately, they are few.

    Lightning From Scratch

In this video, Deke McClelland shows you how to create a base for realistic lightning which you can then tweak for your own purposes. You will need to make an account at his site to access the video, but its all free...

True, but it helps if you know how to load and cock the gun first :)

Yeah I agree with that. For some things, in terms of quality and reasonable duration in creating the effect, plugins are the only practical way. Thats why I posted the Eye Candy chrome. I see your point, but for the majority of effects, not knowing the manual technique is like taking a half-full...

    Elysium/Team America

Ah, you wouldn't get it if you aren't a Team America fan.

Sure, pushing your boundaries is a must in any industry. Its the guys I meet at parties, who have been using PS for 6 months, and when they ask what I do, and I tell them I'm a graphic designer by trade, and they reply with "Yeah? I'm a designer too!". I don't care if its just their hobby, but...

You're talking 3D. The discussion is about creating it in PS. Of course 3D looks great. I used to be a game designer, I am well aware of those programs, and reasonably well versed in Maya, but I don't use it much these days.

Thats fair, but knowledge of PS and knowledge of industry are two different things. I think thats where the line is. For example, most non pros, even good ones, wouldn't know how to prepare a design brief for a client.

PS is a professional-grade image editing program. If you want to create an effect or style, yet are unable to because you lack the knowledge due to relying on plugins, and thus never investigated the manual methods, you aren't a professional. Thats the problem with the design industry. Every...

And what if your plugin corrupts, or your serial number wrongly reads as invalid? What if you can't get hold if that PS person? Unless you can solve it quickly (most plugin companies won't get back to you the same day) you're screwed. Also you are looking at this from the perspective of a...

    Elysium/Team America

I really disliked this film for the not-so-subtle propaganda, but as I was watching it, Team America came to mind, so I slapped this together just for a laugh.

Yeah that technique is fine if you're after a synthetic metal effect, but realistic chrome is based on the reflection of an image which is distorted. I may be wrong, but I've never seen a technique as realistic as the Eye Candy chrome. If you know of one, link me to it! Been trying out some of...

    Any Sugestions?

No problem :) I didn't think much about typography 5 years ago either, but its something that is often overlooked as an important part of design, even by some professional designers.

You're more familiar with Topaz plugins than I am. Which ones are worth checking out?

Its not long winded, its descriptive. People should know a bit about it before downloading and installing. Just saying "Its good" isn't enough. Good plugins are good, but unfortunately most of them are fairly ****ty compared with manual techniques or real images. The only reason I gave this one...

    Digital MP3 Player concept

I think it would look so much more bad arse if it were in matte black or very dark grey. I love the green. The inner shadow angle doesn't match the drop shadow at the moment - try matching the global light setting for both shadow values, otherwise it looks pretty slick.

While I'm generally not a fan of filters outside of the default PS features as they can leave a gap in your skills if they become corrupted, or you're using a copy of PS without them installed and you haven't bothered to learn to create the effect manually, there are some effects which can only...

    Any Sugestions?

The typographical hierarchy needs a fair bit of work. You need to decide which words are going to be your headers, and which are your sub headers, in other words, which words/sentences will be the largest, and which will be the smallest. Traditionally, the largest are at the top, but it...

    A Halloween Paper Toy
