    Layer effect lost when exported

    If you're saving at a low quality, the emboss may seem to disappear because not enough pixels are utilised to display the gradient properly. If you merge the layer with the emboss into a blank layer, there is no reason why the effect would vanish, and as you say it happens on export, I'd guess...

    Some of My Work. Need Criticism

    you need to work more on your typography and contrast. Your designs aren't very clean and the type is hard to see. You're obviously learning quickly, however it's always good to remember, that sometimes less is more ;-)
