    Try to darken the image before messing with colors. Or, adjust the sliders for shadows specifically. I hope you're using an adjustment layer. If not, do it. C'mon, do it. Bacardi and adjustment layer.

    I think this can be easily done with a custom pattern. After that, apply that pattern to your V-shaped layer, and just turn the fill down, while keeping the opacity at 100%.
