how to color in a shape

You must use a selection, otherwise the paintbucket will fill all the canvas. Try to select the space you want to paint with the magic wand tool and then use the paint bucket. I know a dozen reasons why you shouldn't use this technique, you should go for shapes or at least put one circle on his...

HELP I need masking plug ins/software Any advice?

That's the trickiest job in PS, it all depends on the level extraction needed. I know at least five or six ways to extract a picture from it's background. Do a google search on "photoshop background eraser" and you'll be amazed. BTW, close the window, you have a lot of work in front of you.

The main issue here is that if you're going to build a webpage you'll need both. One for the...

    Unwanted feather?

If you resize, photoshop will do the math algorithms to make sure that the original and resized images look similar and belive me, they do a wonderfull job. The effect you want is pixelate. Draw your design (final size) and play with pixelate->mosaic. PS will give you some "blur", easily removed...

    Fireworks to Photoshop: difficult transition

Remember I said it's all about the layers?. See that small "eye" on the left of each layer? toggle it on the background layer... Now, see the checkered background? it means it is transparent, so when saving, those areas are "missing it's pixels", becoming transparent. It is easy as long as you...

    Fireworks to Photoshop: difficult transition

Photoshop works with layers. Everything new must go to a new layer - that's my rule. The final job is achieved by tuning each layer and by the "sum" of them all. Forget the background layer. Draw a rectangle with the rectangle tool (you'll get a vectorial object). change it's color by clicking...

    color change trouble

I'll use the select color range command and work from there, leaving all the other colors (not selected) alone. You can even tweak the range of the selection.

need to create a black stroke around image

You also need to have "room" for the stroke. If the stroke position is "outside" and you have your document sizes equal to the picture size, my guess is that you won't see the stroke
