    fuzzy/blurry pictures

Doc said, This is true, and it's not a method I would have recommended for landscapes, but even at f2.8 I find I often blur the background further in PS. Ooptea's attached image is a good example. The background could have benefitted from being out of focus to some degree. I suspect in that...

    fuzzy/blurry pictures

A few tips for compacts. Set the camera to Aperture priority mode and use a wide aperture setting (try f2.8). Many people assume the opposite, but wider aperture settings ensure faster shutter speeds and it's the shutter speed that has the greatest effect on subject sharpness when holding a...

    Another selection question

Doc There are lots of ways of doing this, but the following may help if you don't have a steady hand. Open the image in PS and use the magic wand to select around/outside the image. Invert the selection. Then open the Channels palette and save the selection as an Alpha channel. With the...

Illustrator vector art using illustrator 2

Having used CorelDraw, with all its inherant issues, for some years. I have tried several times to change to illustrator, but just can't get on with its less user friendly tools. Anyone who can produce good work with this program has my fullest admiration. Sark

    Interesting question, maybe.

What confuses some people, is the difference between an open image and an image file. A jpeg may be 2mb stored as an image file, but when it is an open image displayed on your screen, even displayed in a browser, its size increases considerably. You can test this by opening a jpeg with Task...

    Interesting question, maybe.

lenny109 What is important to understand is, that a file that is saved as a jpeg is smaller than the same file saved as a psd file, but when you open that jpeg in Photoshop it reverts back to a psd file. All open files in Photoshop are basically psd's. If you don't resave as a jpeg you...

OMG I can see the forum! :)

Welles XP & IE....As Mark says it wasn't related to either of these issues though. Have no idea what IP range is. It just seemed strange that the site went dead regarding posts. I wondered whever it was some annual holiday or that strange American version of football (Superbowl) distracting...

    Transferring a web address

Thanks for posting. It seems it's easier than I expected. I hadn't actually expired, but most companies appear to have a simple transfer option. Just one question...Is there any reason why a UK citizen cannot register with a US company. I thought I'd read something about this in the past...

    Transferring a web address

Hi all. I don't have a web site, but have a web address which I use for email forwarding. This is now due for renewal and the company want to charge me three times what I could re-register elsewhere for. Just wondered how easy, and how to go about transferring it to another company. I...

    Skywriting

Remember also, that you can stroke a path with a brush. You can use a pen tool to get your text just right before stroking with the brush by clicking the stroke path button at the bottom of the paths palette. Might make things a little easier. Sark

    .psd v's .tif

Welles. It appears I do not have the Full size option in PS7's Preferences. The settings only affect thumbnails. Will just save as Tiffs. File size is not a major issue for me, so uncompressed Tiffs with zip compressed layers are fine (compressed Tiffs don't preview). With only the layers...

    OverSharp Mask

Just a variation of Welles method that might interest you. Rather than duplicate the image. Run High pass at about 5pix or higher, on your image. Then go into Edit/Fade High Pass. Set blend to Overlay (Soft light for a less harsh effect). The Opacity slider now gives you a live preview that...

    .psd v's .tif

WOW, what a response from what I thought was a simple question. As a non pro, my workflow rarely leaves my own system. I'm using Win 2K and use the My Pictures image preview viewer. This works with all formats I use except .psd. Having played around with a layered Tiff I was suprised that...

    B&W

Not at my PC right now, but I'm sure if you want B&W, you just change the mode to 1 bit (Bitmap). This is true B&W, not grayscale, as in the image evil posted. 1 bit is two colour B&W. You can't even have antialiased edges, so not really sure when you would want to use this. Sark

    .psd v's .tif

Hi all. What's the difference between saving as a layered tiff and saving a psd file. Tiffs show up in my folders image preview window, whereas psd's don't, hence the question. Thanks Sark

Make a clipart of a man out of a CD image or shape?

MrZen I'm a little baffled by what you are trying to do. If you just want a man shaped outline with a fill from another image you can do the following. Place the man image on one layer with the fill image above it on another layer. Remove any pixels from the man images background using...

    Silly questions

A Layer mask Controls the opacity/transparency of a layer using the greyscale. Black makes the layer completely transparent, white makes it fully opaque. Shades of grey create varying degrees of opacity/transparency. You can use different shades of black/white/grey on the same mask to control...

    Silly questions

Pixelization isn't the problem, bicubic resampling will remove that. The problem is, resampling without deterioration of image detail. It is possible to resample with virtually no loss of detail using programs like Extensis pxl SmartScale, or Shortcut S Spline pro (now called Photozoom pro)...

    Centreing Layers in PS

Solved this one now. :righton: If I center to a selection (Select/All), using the Align buttons on the property bar, it doesn't record. If I use the same buttons in the Layer menu, it records perfectly...Strange! Sark
