    I can't see too clearly but it appears you are starting a new path, rather than continuing the existing path, hence the original path is not visible. Check your layers panel to verify. If you want the last point to go another direction use the Convert Anchor Point tool to drag the upper handle...

    I don't know that there is a simple way to do this at all. The best way I know of is to use strokes. Make your first curve as just a stroke with no fill. Duplicate it, then add points to make for the section you want to keep, and delete the outer most points. Align it to the original, reduce...

    When you use a transparency mask, you are then working with two objects, each of which can be edited individually. Click on either in the Transparency window and the selected object will be outlined in blue. Once selected use any of the tools to edit it as needed. The same for the pattern...

    In Illustrator you can use a transparency mask. Make a new shape on top, the same size as the pattern object, fill it with a black and white gradient. Select both objects, then Window-Transparency-Make Mask.
