    unfortunately, you're going to have to stripe it. Light parts of the hair go white, dark(er) parts black. Pay attention to detail and take your time and it'll turn out pretty well. It's going to be a royal pain to pull off though...

    That's really odd. The only thing I can think of is that possibly your Mode for the gradient isn't set to 'normal'. In my experience, setting a blending mode to something like luminosity just turns things grey. If that's not it, than I can't help you. Sorry.
