hi guys, first off, sorry in advance if my question is in the wrong area... not offense intended.

here's my situation... i went to save my file. File > Save as > "filename" type: "all files"

which i think was a mistake because photoshop saved my file as an ms-dos application

i can't open it back up in photoshop anymore, and i tried to rename it and add .psd at the end of the file name, and nothing happened. any ideas on how i can get it back to a .psd so i can get back in and continue editing it?

Modern OS's hide the actual extension of the file... so when you try to rename the file, you're just adding to the beginning of the file and not actually changing the extension. ie... you save a file called myFile.exe by accident. Then go to the OS and try to rename it... click.. name... close... nothing happens. What you actually did was change the name of the file to myFile.psd.exe. So what you have to do is show the file extensions and change it or change the name in actual file properties so that you are changing the actual extension and not just the file name.

Welcome to PSG.

What ever Mindblender has said was true......so be careful while your saving your files.

If you accidently saved any files to .exe or some system related file extentions then there no way to revert it back.

when you save files .........be carefull to check that with what extention your saving the file.

And don't messup with the file name xtentions.

I just explained how to convert it back...

okay... fixed

your right, i had it changed to filename.psd.com (for some reason it was a .com file o.O'') but once i showed the file extensions and changed it, it works fine

thanks for all the help!!

if anyone reading this has the same problems, just go to your folder and go Tools > Folder options :: then go under the View tab, and uncheck "hide already know file extensions" ... then you can change the file type by renaming it.

thanks again. later

For some strange reason Microsoft decided to have hide already know file extensions on by default, a bad choice if you really care about security.
