cartoon/retouch effect

it's been drawn.

if you can't draw like 99% of users here, then you can't do this.

if you're looking for an automated way to do it like 99% of the users here, you still can't do it.

so... learn to draw... learn how to use photoshop's painting and drawing abilities instead of always trying to shortcut things and have to program do it for you.

this is in regards to the top picture. the 2nd one looks more like photo manipulation

Smokey is partly right but can be achieved in PS from a photo the most famous photographer I can think of that does this is a lady called Jill Greenberg see more of her work here http://www.jillgreenberg.com/Fine-art/photos/end-times#/

How it is done is a nicely lit portrait to start with and then sampling the base colours in the photo and on new layers painting over the photo hence the smooth skin you do need to be able to paint accurately over the top of the photo and to be honest for once I will say it instead of Smokey this would take days and probably not possible with a mouse highly reccommended that you use a graphics tablet.

and you may then need to run it through a plugin like topaz Adjust to finish it off.

However if you want a quick fix then you may get similar using topaz however you really need a good starting boint and really smoothe skin.

Of course you need to learn to walk before you can run but there is no need to answer questions like that Smokey you just sound arrogant and for someone that seems to look down on everything we do here makes me wonder why you bothered even signing up and participating in our Community.

Why does this joker keep using the forum?

the same reason you do all the free work around here... to pass time

that said, i do enjoy offering help and advice, but some things do in fact irk me, like somebody coming in and looking for ways to quickly automate a certain type of look, other than actually trying to draw it and achieve it through manual digital drawing and painting

I would guess that 1% of the users that come in are unaware that Photoshop can actually be used to draw and paint naturally- they all think it's "file/edit/filter..." etc etc. Again, that's limited thinking and yields limited results.

But I agree it was a little rude and I apologize.

Thanks for being human with the apology, as for help and support we all work in different ways using 'different tools' you might take note of that last part.

Cindy Grundsten and Jill Greenberg do fantastic work. The styles they have developed are almost eerie, but beautiful. But they do not produce an effect that could be said to mimic the first image. The first image is a drawing (maybe a painting) and there is just no way (so far) to digitally produce those effects by applying a filter.

But there are lots of great ways to take a photo and manipulate it to look more like a drawing and then apply other effects to give it that soft, fluid color or porcelain appearance. You have to be patient, persistent, willing to fail, eager to try new techniques, and not a newbie with 3 weeks experience in Photoshop. In the meantime, you can still get some decent manipulations, just not quite Jill Greenburg :D.

Not everyone has the talent to draw. Some that use Photoshop have no talent at all and just use it for fun. And some are marvelous photographers that have no interest in drawing per se.

It takes all kinds.
